Six minutes with a pan-African gospel choir is a shot of joy for the weary soul

Founded in 2002, the London African Gospel Choir (LAGC) is a pan-African musical ensemble whose melding of diverse musical skills with a celebratory style has brought them international acclaim. Bridging cultures and genres, music and dance, their eclectic performances include everything from the traditional music of African churches to song covers from Paul Simon’s Afrobeat era.

A collaboration between the LAGC and the UK director and photographer Samuel Bradley, You’re All I Need to Get By features members of the choir discussing how performing brings them closer to God, and one another. Part documentary, part music video, the piece draws out the colourful outfits, energetic style and natural charisma of the performers, building a rich contrast with the traditional English church Bradley captures them in. Lifted by Bradley’s stylish lens and the LAGC’s talents, this portrait of communion and community doesn’t require a spiritual outlook in order to savour – only an appreciation of artistry and an affinity for expressions of joy.
