It’s tricky to define what an emotion is: is surprise one, or something else? Here are a few simple rules to get started

Andrew Ortony is a cognitive scientist and professor emeritus of education, psychology and computer science at Northwestern University in Illinois. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and of the Association for Psychological Science. He has published more than 100 articles in academic journals, and co-authored the highly influential 1988 book The Cognitive Structure of Emotions (2nd edition forthcoming) and edited Metaphor and Thought (2nd ed, 1993).
