Jennifer Petersen is associate professor of communication at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in Los Angeles. She is the author of Murder, the Media, and the Politics of Public Feelings: Remembering Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr (Indiana University Press, 2011) and How Machines Came to Speak: Media Technologies and Freedom of Speech (Duke University Press, 2022).
