Harriet: baker

13 MINUTES

As a bread baker, Harriet thrives in the day’s liminal hours

Harriet Hayes has built her life around bread and family. As a professional baker, this means going for a 3am run while everyone else sleeps, and then heading to work at the crack of dawn. And as a mother of two young children, including one with high-functioning autism, this means diligent dedication that requires a job operating well outside the nine-to-five hustle. Like its subject, this day-in-the-life portrait of Hayes relishes the light-dotted pre-morning streets of Los Angeles, the day’s liminal moments, and the physicality of baking. By bringing striking cinematography to the demanding pace of her routine, the US filmmaker David Grabias creates a captivating portrait of the kind of life that’s surely well lived, but rarely so well documented.
